Welcome to Curly & Lovely Poodle Kennel

Your destination for exceptional particolor standard poodles also known as giant poodles

Whether you’re here as a poodle enthusiast or a potential standard poodle owner, we’re excited to share valuable information about these remarkable dogs.

Why choose a giant poodle?

At Curly & Lovely, we are passionate about poodles, particularly the particolor, multicolor and royal patterned varieties. The poodle is renowned for its intelligence, friendly demeanor, and family-oriented nature. These qualities, combined with their playful energy and love for children, make poodles one of the most popular family dogs. Their hypoallergenic coat also makes them an ideal choice for individuals with fur allergies, while their active nature makes them perfect companions for hiking and outdoor adventures.

Our specialty: rare particolor, multicolor and royal patterned poodles

At Curly & Lovely, we specialize in breeding standard poodles which is another name for the giant poodles with rare particolor, multicolor and royal patterns. These unique poodles are considered true rarities in Europe and the royal pattern all of the World. Raised in a loving family environment, our poodles are surrounded by children, ensuring they grow up as well-socialized, friendly, and highly intelligent dogs.

What are standard and particolor poodles?

The term “standard poodle” refers to the size of the poodle, which typically measures 45-60 cm at the withers and weighs 22-30 kg. Despite their size, they are affectionate “couch dogs” that thrive in a family setting.

The term “particolor poodle” describes a poodle with a multicolor pattern, usually featuring spots or patches of color on a white base. There are different types of multicolor poodles, including abstract and particolor. Abstract poodles have more color than white, while particolor poodles have more white than color. Due to its increasing popularity, the term particolor is sometimes used incorrectly to describe both patterns.

The origins and rarity of particolor poodles

Particolor poodles first gained recognition in America and are still more common there than in Europe. This rarity is why we imported our breeding dogs—two males and three females: Prince, Duke, Nicole, Brenda, Lina—from AKC-registered, fully screened kennels in the United States and one incredible rare royal patterned male, Boyar, from Russia. Because particolor colors are not yet accepted by the FCI in Europe, our breeding dogs and their puppies come with American pedigree certificates.

Clarifying misconceptions about particolor and harlequin poodles

There is often confusion in Europe regarding black & white particolor poodles, which are sometimes mistakenly referred to as harlequin poodles. However, the harlequin gene does not exist in purebred poodles. This gene is found on the H locus, which in poodles is always h/h, indicating that harlequin coloring is impossible in the breed. Additionally, the merle gene, which affects the harlequin pattern in other breeds, is also absent in purebred poodles.

At some point in the past, it is believed that a herding dog carrying the merle gene may have been introduced into a poodle bloodline, leading to the appearance of merle-colored poodles in some lines. This has sparked debate among geneticists and breeders about the purity of such poodles. However, experts in poodle genetics assert that the merle gene cannot exist in the breed, and merle-colored poodles are not considered purebred.

In any case, no poodle possesses the harlequin gene; the multicolor pattern is determined by the S locus and has nothing to do with harlequin. Therefore, black & white poodles are correctly referred to as particolor poodles or abstract poodles, not harlequin. In the United States, where the terminology is well-understood, no organization incorrectly labels black & white particolor poodles as harlequin.
